Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sought voter support for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to ensure peace and job-creating development.
At a BJP rally in central Assam’s Hojai on Wednesday (March 25, 2026), he promised two lakh government jobs for the state’s youth over the next five years.
Mr. Sarma claimed that Assam was free of blasts, shutdowns and agitations during his tenure as Chief Minister. “This is why Assam needs a BJP government for peace and development,” he said.
“During election rallies, I used to meet depressed, agitated youth. Today, they ask me about vacancies in the police and other departments because there is an atmosphere to dream of a brighter future,” he said, pointing out how his government proved naysayers wrong by providing one million government posts.
“If the BJP stays in power, I will provide two million jobs in the next five years. Nobody will have to pay anything. Mama gives you this guarantee,” he said. The youth call him Mama, which means uncle in Assamese.
The Chief Minister, who campaigned for Shiladitya Dev, the BJP candidate, also took a swipe at the Congress for taking money for recruitment of Anganwadi workers as well.
Earlier in the day, he campaigned in the adjacent Lumding constituency. The BJP is trying to retain both Lumding and Hojai, where Bengali-speaking people — Hindus and Muslims — are in the majority.
