The Italian star also made history during the match, extending his streak to 28 consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, surpassing Novak Djokovic’s 10-year-old record of 24.

Michelsen put a lot of pressure on him, especially in the second set, where the American raced to a 5:2 lead. However, Sinner showed his class and composure, fighting to force a tiebreak and eventually sealing the win with a strong serve.“I feel like I served very well in the important moments and that helped me, especially in the tough moments,” Sinner said. “But it wasn’t easy today – I played a night game yesterday and a day game today, so the conditions were very different.With this win, Sinner remains on course for a ‘Sunshine Double’ having previously won the Indian Wells title.

In other matches, Frances Tiafoe advanced to the quarter-finals and will now face Sinner. One of the biggest surprises came from the young Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce, who defeated Sebastian Korda in a thrilling three-set match.Landaluce, who was in contention for the win earlier this season, dedicated his win to his late grandmother, saying: “She would have been 101 last week and she passed away a few months ago. I wanted to give her the win.”Elsewhere, Jiří Lehecka eliminated Taylor Fritz, while Tommy Paul, Arthur Fils, Francisco Cerundolo and Alexander Zverev also advanced to form an exciting quarter-final line-up in Miami.
