Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently advised pacer Arshdeep Singh to improve his bowling with the new ball. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) season around the corner, discussions about the form and roles of the players have already started and Arshdeep is among those in the limelight.
Pathan talked about Arshdeep on his YouTube channel and discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the Punjab Kings. Arshdeep is one of the deadliest bowlers in India who has already taken 127 wickets. However, according to the former all-rounder, the left-handed batsman has been inconsistent with his inswing deliveries for quite some time now.

“Arshdeep, who was your highest wicket-taker, has been taking wickets consistently. One thing he will definitely have to focus on is how he bowls with the new ball. Because he hasn’t bowled much with the new ball in the last year, or a little less than a year, from what I’ve observed,” Pathan said.
He further expressed concern over Arshdeep’s economy rate which has deteriorated since the Asia Cup. Ahead of the 2025 Asian Cup, his economy rate was 8.29 but rose to 9.05 after the tournament.
“His stats have gone down a bit compared to pre-Asia Cup and post-Asia Cup in terms of new bowling. He will have to pay attention to that and also pay attention to his economy,” he added.
HOW DID ARSHSDEEP PERFORM IN T20S?
Arshdeep was generally effective in the overs and played a key role in India’s 2024 Men’s World T20 triumph, taking 17 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.16. Overall, he has been one of India’s most outstanding bowlers in the T20 overs and has emerged as the second highest wicket-taker among Indian bowlers after Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
In 161 T20 innings in the powerplay, Arshdeep took 90 wickets at an economy rate of 8.24.
He has also been a consistent performer for Punjab Kings since his IPL debut in 2019. Arshdeep is currently the franchise’s leading wicket-taker with 97 scalps in 87 matches and is just three wickets away from becoming the fourth Indian left-arm seamer to reach 100 IPL wickets.
Arshdeep will look to start his campaign on a strong note when Punjab Kings take on Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on March 31.
