A Vijayawada-bound IndiGo flight from Hyderabad (IGO4HJ) that arrived at Gannavaram Airport at around 4:20 PM on Tuesday, March 24, had to be grounded after a flat tire was found.
All 79 passengers, including 75 passengers and four crew members, are safe at the Vijayawada International Airport, according to authorities.
According to authorities, the pilot reported the incident to air traffic control 45 minutes after the flight landed.
A new tire is being flown from Bengaluru and the flight will resume once the replacement is done.
An airport official said that a tire burst may occur due to strong air pressure or due to tire wear. However, only technicians can pinpoint the exact cause, the official said.
Authorities said the flight scheduled to depart for Hyderabad was canceled and passengers were accommodated on alternate flights.
Passengers who canceled their tickets were reportedly given a full refund.
It is not yet clear whether the tire burst before take off in Hyderabad, while landing at Gannavaram airport or after landing. But if the tire had blown before takeoff, the pilot would have had trouble landing, authorities said. They are sure there were no problems with the landing. But aeronautical engineers need to look into it before reaching a conclusion, they added.
