Sewli Mohilary, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate from Kokrajhar Assembly constituency, has 37 bank accounts and owns 32 vehicles, including 16 tippers and four tractors.
The 49-year-old candidate, who is the wife of Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagram Mohilara, has declared total assets worth ₹54.04 crore. This includes ₹5.26 crore in 37 bank accounts and vehicles worth over ₹12 crore.
Among Ms Mohilara’s movable assets listed in her affidavit are machinery worth ₹12.59 crore. Her real estate worth ₹20.03 crore includes several agricultural plots and commercial buildings.
Her husband is comparatively poor. He operates eight bank accounts and owns a high-end SUV; his total assets are worth ₹9.17 crore.
However, Ms Mohilary is far behind 70-year-old All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal in terms of property ownership. He, the perfume baron, declared ₹ 222.34 as total assets.
His movable assets, including cash in eight bank accounts — six of them in Mumbai — are worth ₹52.43 crore. According to his affidavit, he owns six vehicles while his wife Rizwana Badruddin Ajmal owns three. The vehicles are worth ₹2.17 crore.
Mr. Ajmal, a three-time MP, is contesting from the Binnakandi seat in central Assam.
I owe a friend
The combined income of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jalukbari candidate, and his businesswoman wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma almost doubled to ₹35.16 crore in 2026 from ₹17.27 crore in 2021.
What has remained constant in the affidavits five years apart is the ₹2,000 borrowed by his childhood friend, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary and Assam advocate general Devajit Saikia. The Chief Minister’s wife also continues to owe Mr Saikia ₹1 lakh.
Mr. Sarma’s affidavit states that he does not own any vehicle while his wife owns an SUV purchased in 2018 worth ₹21.60 lakh. His salary of ₹ 1.60 lakh per month is listed as his only source of income.
The combined income of chief minister and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi’s bête noire also jumped from ₹4.66 crore in 2024 (Lok Sabha elections) to ₹7.57 crore.
Mr Gogoi, 43, cited his income as a Lok Sabha member as his only source of income. His real estate assets include an inherited flat in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. He is contesting the assembly elections from Jorhat constituency.
