
Several people searched for “India Lockdown again” and “Lockdown news” online on Tuesday amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and six years after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“India’s re-blockade and ‘news of the block’ began to emerge hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha speeches on the Middle East conflict, recalled the COVID-19 pandemic and related disruptions to the global supply chain.
What did PM Modi say?
“Even in the past, our government has not allowed the burden of global crises to fall on farmers,” PM Modi said in Parliament.
The Prime Minister said that the difficult global conditions caused by this war are likely to persist for a long time and urged the nation to remain prepared and united as it stood together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He reaffirmed that India sees dialogue and diplomacy as the only way to restore peace in the Middle East. PM Modi also noted that India remains in regular contact with all parties, including Iran, Israel and the United States, to emphasize de-escalation.
In light of the ever-evolving situation in the Middle East, the Prime Minister said on Tuesday that its negative effects are likely to persist for some time and urged citizens to remain prepared for all eventualities.

He highlighted the “serious side effects of war” and drew parallels with India’s response to COVID-19, where expert commissions helped address major issues. He added that the seven empowered groups will now address the impact of the conflict and formulate strategies for fuels, fertilizers, gas, supply chains and inflation.

The central government has not announced any lockdown.

The conflict in the Middle East escalated following the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on Israeli cities such as Tel Aviv, Eilat and Dimona, as well as US military bases throughout the region. Israel responded with strikes across western and central Iran, including Tehran.
The situation has disrupted trade and energy supplies, particularly through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, triggered a global energy crisis and pushed up oil prices.
A look at the 2020 nationwide lockdown announcement
PM Modi announced a nationwide lockdown on 24 March 2020 for 21 days, restricting the movement of 138 million people in the country as a precautionary measure against the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure followed a 14-hour voluntary curfew on March 22 and the implementation of various regulations in other countries affected by COVID-19. When the lockdown was enforced, India had around 500 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Since January 2020, it has spread worldwide, leading to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global health emergency, officially ending in May 2023.

After months of facing thousands of cases a day, numerous deaths and conducting a massive vaccination campaign, India has successfully contained COVID-19 and currently faces no significant threat from the virus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China.

Although the disease has not been completely eradicated, with only seven active cases reported and 30,581 people discharged as of February 2, the situation remains largely under control, with no immediate cause for concern or reimposition of quarantine.
