Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has praised Rinka Singh after the franchise named him vice-captain ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.
Speaking at Knights Unplugged 3.0, Rahane emphasized how integral Rinku has become to the franchise’s identity.
“Obviously, and as you summed it up yourself, when we think of KKR, the first name that comes to mind is Shah Rukh Khan; the next name is Rinku Singh,” Rahane said.
RINKU’S ENTRANCE IN ORDER
Rinku’s journey with Kolkata Knight Riders has been one of perseverance and gradual rise. After spending seven years with the franchise, he hasn’t always had the opportunities that many young players are afforded in the IPL. Often used as a substitute outfielder in the early years, Rinku had to make the most of his limited chances.
By performing consistently in these moments, he has worked his way into the core of the team and is now considered one of the most important players for KKR. His rise at the franchise level also carried over to the international stage where he broke into India’s T20I set-up and was part of the team that won T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad.
KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar also reflected on Rinku’s journey and growth within the setup.
“I think it’s quite fitting because my first memory of coming to KKR and being part of the support staff was working with Rinku Singh. So now that I’m taking over as head coach, I think over the years we’ve seen Rinku Singh develop not only as a cricketer but also as a leader over the last couple of years, couple of years, while his performances have spoken a lot for themselves, I think outside the team in many ways it speaks for itself, I think, they are always looking forward,” said Nayar.
He added that the timing was right for Rinku to be given more responsibility within the group.
“Now with a big power forward, we wanted him to have a bit more responsibility on his shoulders and I feel it’s the perfect time after becoming a World Cup champion to come in and take responsibility and help take the reins,” he said.
RINKU ON THE DEPUTY’S OBLIGATION
Before the new season, KKR confirmed Rinku Singh as vice-captaina decision that reflects both his growth and standing on the team. Rinku was addressed by the team and management at the event and talked about what the role means to him.
“It’s an amazing feeling. You gave me an opportunity to serve as the vice-captain. Recently, Team India became the world champion and I was a part of that journey. Every player’s dream is to represent Team India and win the World Cup, so now my dream has come true.”
As for the responsibility you have given me, sir, I will do my best. I will work closely with my teammates and all of you and fulfill my duties with full commitment.
I would also like to say this: please continue to support our team whether we are going through good times or bad. Your support is needed even more during difficult phases. That’s all I would like to say.
We will definitely play well as a team. We have a very strong team. Although the tournament is held every year, this time we will try to perform even better and try to bring the trophy home.”
Rinku’s appointment marks another milestone in a journey built on patience and performance, and underscores the trust the franchise has placed in one of its most consistent performers.
