The Telangana government has said that there are 13,929 vacancies of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff in its public health system. Recruitment is currently underway to fill a significant part of these positions. The data was shared at the Telangana Legislative Council on Monday, March 23.
Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha, replying to questions from members S. Vani Devi and Thakkellapalli Ravinder Rao, said the expansion of medical colleges in the state has led to a parallel increase in the demand for teachers, contributing to the shortage. He noted that filling posts such as associate professors and professors was challenging due to the limited pool of candidates meeting the eligibility norms prescribed by the National Medical Commission.
According to the figures presented to the House, the total sanctioned number across all categories is 51,455, against which 37,526 employees are currently working, leaving 13,929 vacancies.
There are 13,547 sanctioned posts in primary health facilities under the Health and Family Commissionerate, of which 10,896 are filled and 2,651 are vacant. In primary health facilities under the director of public health (DPH), out of 7,769 approved posts, 6,402 are filled and 1,367 remain vacant.
The situation is more acute in secondary health facilities under Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP). Out of 9,554 sanctioned posts, only 5,848 are filled and 3,706 vacancies remain. There are 20,585 sanctioned posts in director medical education (DME) tertiary care institutions, which include teaching hospitals, of which 14,380 are filled, leaving 6,205 vacancies.
Following this, the government informed the House that recruitment is currently underway, which would cover a substantial part of these vacancies. Direct recruitment is going on in all categories and institutions for 7,170 posts, which are expected to be filled soon. A large part of these recruitments is concentrated in secondary and tertiary care institutions.
Overall, after the completion of the ongoing recruitment process, the net vacancies in the state’s public health system are expected to reach 6,759, the response said.
