Former India batsman Aakash Chopra has come out strongly on MS Dhoni’s role in Chennai Super Kings, saying the veteran should be the clear choice to captain the side in IPL 2026. With speculation about Dhoni’s role mounting, Chopra’s remarks have added fresh fuel to the debate.
Dhoni, who is set to appear in his 19th IPL season, he is expected to be a part of the CSK squad, though his role is likely to be more flexible. Speaking to JioHotstar, Chopra explained why he believes Dhoni should lead the side if he is part of the playing XI:

“Look, if Dhoni is playing, then he has to be the captain. I am clear that if he is around and sticks for 20 overs, he will be on the field for the whole match.”
Find me a better captain than Mahendra Singh Dhoni on this field, out of the 22 players involved. If there is one, I’ll admit it. But if it’s there, why doesn’t it lead?”
“For me, if CSK want to get the best out of Dhoni for a turnaround, then he has to be the captain.
Chopra’s comments come at a time when CSK is going through a transition phase with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side after Dhoni stepped down as captain ahead of the 2024 season.
DHONI’S ROLE UNDER THE SCANNER
Over the past few seasons, Dhoni’s responsibilities on the field have gradually reduced. He operated largely as a finisher, often coming on during the final overs, with the spare batting rule further limiting his involvement.
At the same time, the composition of the ČSK staff indicates a long-term transition. With the likes of Sanju Samson now part of the set-up, the franchise seems to be planning for the future, including potential changes in wicket responsibilities.
Despite this, Dhoni’s influence remains significant, both on and off the field. His experience continues to be a key asset, especially after CSK endured a difficult IPL 2025 season where they finished at the bottom of the table.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has already confirmed that Dhoni will be available for the entire IPL 2026 season, though his exact role will be decided by the team management.
As the team looks to bounce back under Gaikwad, the question surrounding Dhoni’s role remains central – whether as a leading presence or, as Chopra suggests, as captain again.
