LPG supply remains a problem, but there is no drying up of LPG distributors, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said in a statement today. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) of the ministry told reporters on March 23 that around 3.5 lakh domestic and commercial natural gas (PNG) connections have been provided or activated in the last three weeks.
“LPG supply still remains a concern, but there is no drying up of LPG distributors. Panic LPG bookings have reduced and supplies are normal,” she added.
Commercial LPG available to States: Ministry
On the availability of commercial LPG, Sharma noted that currently about 50% of the volume will be available to state governments and Union Territories (UTs). She added that the Center has asked states to include community kitchens, dhabas, dairy and food units, hotels, industrial canteens, restaurants and subsidized canteens or outlets run by the state government or local bodies and five kg free trade LPG (FTL) for migrant labor in this allocation.
“So far about 20 states and UTs have allocated commercial LPG and about 15,800 tonnes of commercial LPG has been raised,” the secretary added.
“Rumors of Speculation of LPG Cylinder Conversions”
Sharma described rumors of alleged conversions of domestic 14.2 kg LPG cylinders to 10 kg LPG cylinders as speculative. “This is highly speculative and there can be no comment or explanation for any speculation. Don’t believe rumours,” she said.
- For rest of the states/UTs, PSU Oil Marketing companies release commercial LPG cylinders. A total of about 15,842 MT has been lifted by commercial entities in the States/UTs since March 14, 2026.
