Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has stirred debate over Riyan Parag’s appointment as Rajasthan Royals captain ahead of IPL 2026, suggesting the 24-year-old could have benefited from preferential support within the franchise.Parag is set to take over the leadership role from Sanju Samson, who was traded to Chennai Super Kings for Rs 18 crore in a high-profile deal that saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move in opposite directions before the mini-auction last December.

It’s their decision but he is treated like a king there. Parag didn’t have a good season last year but he did great the year before. He didn’t do anything deadly last year,” he said. With Samson sidelined last season due to injury, Parag has already led the Royals in eight games and managed just two wins. Despite this record, the franchise backed him over other contenders such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and newly acquired Jadeja. But Parago’s individual performances offered glimpses of his attacking potential. Last season, he scored 393 runs at a strike rate of 166.52 and also made IPL history by becoming the first player to hit six consecutive sixes in one innings, achieving the milestone against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025.Parag was selected as a teenager in IPL 2017 and remained a constant presence for Rajasthan Royals. He amassed 1,566 runs in 84 matches, including seven half-centuries, although there was often talk of inconsistency.Assessing the Royals’ chances, Srikkanth offered a mixed outlook. While acknowledging their potential, he cautioned against their unpredictability. “They are a decent side. They have the potential to upset sides. But they are also a self-destructive side. Yet when two of their top five click, they crush the opposition. The opening stand of Jaiswal-Suryavanshi is their biggest plus. They are capable of winning games on their own. So they are a good side, but not dangerous. They are not even a play-off qualifier.”50. he remarked.
