A mob pelted stones and eggs at Trinamool Congress president Mahua Moitra in her constituency in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Wednesday.

While BJP president Samik Bhattacharya blamed internal divisions in the Trinamool for the attack, Ms Moitra said the BJP was behind it. Sharing a video with the crowd, Ms Moitra said, “There are no public outpourings. These are coordinated BJP attacks. Look at the BJP flags.”

The attack on Ms. Moitra came a day after the Calcutta High Court asked the West Bengal government to draw up guidelines for taking the accused (mostly Trinamool leaders) to police custody. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee on Tuesday (July 1, 2026) also asked the state for the existing guidelines for transportation of accused and asked the state to report on measures taken against egg attacks. The bench also added that arresting one or two persons will not solve the problem and it is about social awareness.

The BJP president appealed to the people to stop such attacks. Such cases affected the image of West Bengal in front of the entire country, he said. A few days ago, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP said that egg-throwing is not part of BJP’s culture or agenda. “If such incidents are repeated, BJP’s reputation will be dragged through the mud,” he said.

There have been a number of attacks, especially with eggs, on local Trinamool leaders, councilors and former MLAs who were arrested on various charges including extortion and election violence after the regime change in West Bengal. A large number of people – some of them BJP supporters – gathered outside police stations, courts and even outside the residences of the accused and pelted eggs at those in custody. Even sitting MPs and MLAs like Saugata Roy and Kunal Ghosh had to face the test.

Most of the time people indulging in such attacks claim that local Trinamool leaders took their money and tortured them. They justified their action by saying that it was about public anger.
