In a surprising turn of events, Urvashi Theatre, one of Bengal’s iconic single screens, has reopened with the much talked about Dhurandhar: The Revengerunning to a packed house. With the 45-year lease coming to an end, it looked like the curtain would come down on the Theater Royal, but for now it’s good news for fans.
The Kannada rural drama Landlord, starring Duniya Vijay, was the last film screened in January 2026 before the theater shut down on a court order. The Karnataka High Court has ordered the tenants to hand over the vacant plots by demolishing the existing buildings to the landlords by February 15, 2026.
There has been no official word yet on the latest development, but the theater’s owners have reportedly been given a three-year lease extension. Urvashi’s regular patrons took to social media to express their relief. “We watched Dhurandhar 2 in Urvashi. We asked the box office about the theater closing news and they said ‘Urvashi is not going anywhere’,” said one fan on Reddit.

Fans at X wished theater owners would consider renovations to stay more relevant in the multiplex era. While it remains to be seen if Urvashi will make a long-term comeback, the theater’s second innings got off to a flying start and tickets for the Dhurandhar sequel were sold out quickly.
