Two people died and another sustained serious injuries after a slab collapsed from the third floor of a building in Kundanbagh on Sunday morning. Panjagutta police have closed the case.
The deceased have been identified as Vivek (30) and his father Devi Das (60). The injured Dwaraka Prasad (65), who owns the building, is undergoing treatment and is said to be in a serious condition.
According to police, the elevator was built separately in the building, leaving a gap between the elevator structure and the lobby. An iron plate measuring about 5×5 feet was installed to bridge this gap and later covered with cement to resemble a balcony.
Officials said the iron structure has rusted and weakened over the years. On Sunday morning, the owner, along with two electricians, stepped onto the slab to repair the elevator, and the structure cracked under the combined weight before plunging from the third floor.
Police said the victims fell with the slab, resulting in fatal injuries to two of them. The bodies were taken for autopsy. A case has been registered and investigation is on. Mr. Prasad is being treated for his injuries and his condition is said to be critical.
