Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who oversaw India’s diplomacy with partner countries during the May 2025 Operation Sindoor against terrorist elements in Pakistan, has been given a one-year extension to serve until July 2027.
Mr. Misri is the second foreign minister to receive an extension. Earlier, S. Jaishankar was given a one-year extension in 2017.
Mr. Misri has managed several important diplomatic engagements for India, notably with the second Donald Trump administration in the United States, and trade engagements with the European Union.
A notification by the Cabinet Appointments and Establishment Committee said Mr. Misri would serve until July 14, 2027.
He also dealt with India’s response to US-Israeli attacks against Iran. In the coming year, India is expected to navigate difficult trade negotiations with the United States and is expected to host Mr Trump. Additionally, the situation in the Persian Gulf would also require sustained attention as the fragile US-Iran peace deal is being tested while Israel continues its military campaigns in Lebanon and Gaza.
India can also host important outreach events for the Global South in the coming year. The India-Africa Forum summit was postponed in May due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in several African countries, and efforts to hold the summit may resume in the coming months once the Ebola crisis in Africa is over. In addition, it will have important regional relations with the governments of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal during this period.
