From April 1, 2026, several changes related to Permanent Account Number (PAN) card applications will come into force.
The updates were recently highlighted by CSC e-Governance Services India Limited in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the post, the new rules will affect the way users apply for or process PAN cards. Applicants are advised to be aware of the revised guidelines so that they can act before the deadline.
What changes for applicants from April 1?
All these revisions will apply to any citizen who applies for a new PAN or makes any updates in their existing ones on or after April 1, 2026. Here is the full list of changes:
— Other required documents: Until March 31, 2026, PAN applications could only be done using Aadhar. From April 1, 2026, applicants will have to submit additional documents, which is the last chance to apply through the streamlined Aadhaar-based process.
— PAN Name corresponding to Aadhaar: From April 1, 2026, the name on the card will be removed. PAN name will be as per Aadhaar only. Hence, applicants must ensure that their Aadhaar details are correct.
— New PAN forms are coming: As part of the updated process, new PAN application forms are expected to be introduced soon to replace the existing ones. From April 1, 2026, current (old) PAN forms will no longer be accepted for new applications or updates.
What documents will you need?
From April 1, 2026, PAN card applicants will be required to submit additional supporting documents along with their application. These include birth certificate, voter’s card, passport, driver’s license, matriculation certificate, affidavit issued by the municipality and other documents issued by the government.
Authorities have urged citizens to clear PAN-related formalities before the deadline to avoid the additional burden of providing multiple documents and simplify the process for them.
What is a PAN card?
PAN Card is an important identification document issued by the Income Tax Department to all taxpayers in India. This is a 10-digit alphanumeric number that records all information related to personal and corporate taxes.
The PAN card serves as a key document for carrying out financial transactions, making it a mandatory document for banking, tax returns and company registration.

Applicants can apply for a new PAN through the portals of Protean (formerly NSDL eGov), UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL) or through the e-filing portal of the tax authority.
Similarly, a person can also update the details in their PAN through NSDL portal or UTIITSL website.
Government warns PAN holders against potential fraud
The government had earlier issued a public alert warning citizens against a fraudulent email circulating under the name Press Information Bureau (PIB) falsely asking recipients to download an ‘e-PAN card’.
Authorities warned that the message was part of a phishing attempt to obtain sensitive financial information and urged people not to interact with such communications.

“Did you also receive the e-PAN download request email?” PIB Fact Check mentioned in post X. “This email is fake… Do not respond to any emails, links, calls or SMS asking to share financial and sensitive information,” he warned citizens.
