Should IPL teams be allowed to deduct money from players’ wages if they are unable to fulfill their role for the side? R Ashwin feels that way and used Cameron Green’s example to drive home. Green bought KKR for Rs. 25.2 million, making him the most expensive foreign player in the history of the tournament. The Australian all-rounder is expected to fill the void left by Andre Russellwhich means Kolkata will look to him to deliver with bat and ball.

However, since his return from a back injury, Green has been used cautiously by Australia with the ball. During the 2025-26 Ashes series, the all-rounder bowled just 61.5 overs in nine innings. In the 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, Green was used by Australia for just 3.1 overs in four matches.
Taking to his YouTube channel, Ashwin wondered if Green would be able to bowl four overs during an IPL game in the upcoming season, given that Cricket Australia may tell him to manage his workload.
“There is a question about Cameron Green. Will Cricket Australia allow him to bowl all four overs? That is also a possibility. In this scenario, the Australian board tells Green he can play in the IPL, but Test cricket is very important to us, so you can only play so much of the workload,” Ashwin said.
“IPL teams should also have an opportunity where if he bowls only two overs, then they should deduct (Rs) 2 crores. Why not? If he (player) is not able to deliver his four overs, then you should have the right to reduce their money, right?”
‘IF THERE’S A LIMITATION THEN CUT THE MONEY’
Ashwin also said that Green has been roped in to fill both roles and the owners will be disappointed if he remains restricted.
“When you entered the IPL auction, you expected to bowl all four overs and also bat. If there is no bowling restriction, then great, but if there is a restriction, the team should be able to deduct from the contract money,” Ashwin elaborated.
“Imagine you are Shah Rukh Khan and you have paid (Rs) 25 crores for a player. But then he comes and says, ‘Sir, I will bowl only one today, or only 10 balls a day’. How will you feel?” said R Ashwin.
KKR will begin their campaign on March 29 against Mumbai Indians.
