Man arrested for impersonating police officer to extort money from girls’ hostel inmates

The Petbasheerabad police arrested a 25-year-old man for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from the inmates of a girls’ hostel in Suchitra Junction.

The accused, identified as Pandi Yadagiri alias Anil Kumar, is employed as a security guard in a private firm. He is a resident of Mulugu mandal in Siddipet district.

The case came to light after Guduru Vijay Kumar, owner of Monida Sree Girls Hostel, filed a complaint saying that a man dressed in police uniform entered the hostel late at night, threatened the inmates with false criminal cases and demanded money from them.

During investigation, the police found that the accused had earlier worked as a casual laborer with the Mahankali traffic police, where he had learned about police procedures. Police said he later acquired a police uniform, accessories and a motorcycle and started impersonating a police constable to lure money.

Investigators said the accused had earlier targeted a girls’ hostel in Dundigal and also allegedly stopped motorists along the Petbasheerabad-Medchal highway, posing as a traffic police constable and demanding money by threatening them with traffic violations.

Police said that around 15 days before this incident, the accused had visited the Suchitra hostel and instructed the management to ensure that the premises were closed by 10.30 pm every night. On the night of 29 June, he returned in police uniform, threatened the inmates with false cases of prostitution, confiscated their mobile phones, photographed them and demanded ₹5,000 to avoid police action. He withdrew ₹2,000 before leaving.

During the arrest, the police recovered ₹2,000 in cash, a police uniform containing a khaki shirt, trousers, belt, name tag and vest, a mobile phone, a motorcycle, a satchel and a toy gun.
