
NEW DELHI: India is all set to host a major global athletics event as the state of Odisha will host the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships. The announcement was made by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, marking a big moment for the country as it continues to grow its presence in international sports. This will be the first time that India is hosting a major event organized by World Athletics.

Coe, quoted by the AFP news agency, confirmed the decision, saying: “This morning the World Athletics Council awarded two more editions of this event, the World Indoor Championships, in 2028 to Odisha, India and in 2030 to Astana, Kazakhstan.”He added: “The future of the World Indoor Championships looks bright and certain.” The move highlights India’s growing ability to host top-level sporting events.“India will host the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. The global competition will be held at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium,” said AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo.
Bigger plans for the future
India is also preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, seen as a stepping stone to a possible Olympic bid in the future. Holding these events shows the long-term vision of the country to become a major sports center.Coe has previously supported the ambition, calling it “a powerful sign of a nation thinking boldly about its sporting future”.
