Two NGOs, Green Needa, Needamangalam, and Exnora International, Chennai, have come forward to offer free machinery to eradicate ‘seemaikaruvelam’ (Prosopis Juliflora) trees in the state.
In a statement on March 19, Green Needa Chief Coordinator M. Rajavelu and EI President S. Senthur Pari welcomed the Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench’s recent direction to completely phase out the anti-biodiversity plant – ‘seemaikaruvelam’ – imported into Tamil Nadu during past droughts.
In an effort to ensure the eradication of invasive plant species, the NGO is trying to carry out this exercise as a mass movement with the involvement of local residents. Therefore, NOGs have decided to make the machinery required to uproot these plants available on free rent basis to the local people who want to convert their region into a ‘seemaikaruvelam’ free zone. Those who would like to take advantage of this assistance would only have to take care of the cost of fuel, the statement added.
