
A 58-year-old fisherman from Pudukottai district was reported missing after his boat capsized due to gusty winds accompanied by heavy waves while he was fishing in the wee hours of Thursday (March 19, 2026).
Coastal Security Group sources said N. Kuppuraj, 58, and his son K. Ramanathan, 20, went out to sea in an unregistered country boat on Wednesday night (March 18, 2026) to fish from Therkku Pudhukudi village in Manamelkudi taluk.
The boat capsized around 1:30 a.m. Thursday after gusting winds and strong waves while they were fishing about three nautical miles offshore.
Kuppuraj disappeared after the boat capsized, while his son managed to keep aboard the vessel and was rescued by other fishermen. Fishermen and the Coastal Security Group are conducting a search to trace the missing fisherman, sources added.
