Employees opposing the government’s decision to hand over the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport (APSRTC) depots to private electric bus companies staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate in Nellore town. They also submitted a memorandum to the Joint Collector.
Later, the employees handed over their petitions to the District Public Transport Officer (DPTO) and APSRTC officials here. At the call of the All India Road Transport Federation, the union leaders and employees took part in a huge rally and appealed to the government to solve their problems and strengthen the APSRTC.
The union leaders demanded that the government withdraw the decision to hand over APSRTC posts across the state to private companies. They considered it a threat to the future of the public transport undertaking and asked the officials to go ahead with the Nellore-2 depot without any privatisation.
The APSRTC main depot at Somasekara Puram in Nellore is said to be divided into two depots. While Nellore-1 continues for diesel buses, Nellore-1 is dedicated to a private company to run electric buses. Employees in the district expressed strong opposition to the operation of electric buses by private companies.
