The Kerala High Court has refused to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) use of the name “Indian Premier League” (IPL).
The petitioner, Ernakulam-based Ashique, who is said to be a public figure, has challenged the use of the name IPL, which is a 20-20 franchise cricket tournament organized by the BCCI. He claimed that the tournament has been going on for several years and that he recently realized that the IPL is not the official cricket tournament of the country.
As such, the name Indian Premier League is being used illegally by BCCI, he added in his plea.
While hearing the plea, a bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syama Kumar VM observed that the merits of the argument had no merit and refused to entertain the PIL.
