The SSLC Board exams, for which elaborate arrangements were made by the School Education Department, got off to a smooth start in Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag and Uttara Kannada districts on Friday, with no case of malpractice reported on the first day.
The officials and staff of the department have made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the examination, with the usual prohibitory orders in place around the examination centers as a precautionary measure.
As seen in recent years, students arriving at exam centers were greeted by teachers with flowers and sweets and wished good luck.
Officials from the Department of School Education were also present at the examination centers on the first day of the examination.
In Dharwad, out of a total of 28,120 candidates who had registered for the exam, 27,868 appeared for the first language paper at 105 centers on Wednesday, leaving 252 students absent.
In Gadag district, out of 15,843 students who registered for the exam, 15,476 appeared for the first paper at 61 centers spread across the district. As many as 367 students were absent on the first day.
Observers and security members appointed by the respective Deputy Commissioners visited the centers to supervise the conduct of the examination and also check for malpractices.
After the examination, the answer sheets were locked in safes under police protection.
