The National Medical Commission (NMC) has fined a private medical college in Bengaluru’s Devanahalli ₹1 for non-disclosure and payment of stipends to MBBS trainees and post-graduate residents.
A total of seven private medical colleges have been fined by the NMC for the same reason. Akash Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Devanahalli, is the only college from the state to be fined. The remaining six colleges are in Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Acting on orders of the Supreme Court in several cases, the NMC issued a public order on 11 July 2025 directing all medical colleges and institutions across the country to publish on their official websites the stipends paid to MBBS interns and postgraduates as mandated by applicable regulations and to ensure transparency and uniformity in the payment of stipends.
However, the seven colleges, which have now been penalized by the NMC, did not follow the guidelines despite repeated reminders, sources said. “Non-compliance with the above requirements attracts regulatory action under clauses 30 and 31 of the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Evaluation Regulations, 2023 and Postgraduate Medical Education (PGMER) Regulations, 2023 and Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023,” the NMC notice said.
It further stated that continued non-compliance with the mandate regarding the payment of scholarships and their publication on the institutions’ websites will require further regulatory and punitive measures, including but not limited to restriction of admissions. “Permit suspension or other disciplinary action will be taken,” it warned.
