Sanju Samson and MS Dhoni (ANI) Sanju Samson is all set to begin a new phase of his Indian Premier League journey after playing a key role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph. The wicketkeeper-batsman has joined Chennai Super Kings in a major move after leading Rajasthan Royals in recent seasons. He enters a different dynamic at CSK under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, with MS Dhoni still part of the set-up – a factor that could affect Samson’s chances behind the stumps. This move represents both an opportunity and an expectation. Joining one of the most successful IPL franchises puts Samson in a high pressure environment but also gives him a wider platform to elevate his game. Adapting to the conditions in Chepauk will be a new challenge, while CSK’s strong fan base could further boost his profile in the coming season.

He pointed to Samson’s recent form and confidence as key positives heading into the IPL.“Icons from one generation to the next, the baton has been passed in Indian cricket, from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin, then to Virat, with MS Dhoni also part of that era. Before the transition to MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, you had the likes of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, who still carry that aura and continue to perform. In that sense, Sanjuic is a great move. his fantastic form leading into the IPL and winning the World Cup for India with three strikes in a row,” said Kumble on CSK’s decision.Kumble also emphasized that Samson’s value goes beyond his performances. His background and knowledge of the region could strengthen the franchise’s connection with its supporters, while his goalkeeping role adds balance to the team.“I’m sure it will definitely add to the franchise’s fan following. From Chennai’s point of view, he fits their needs because he was born in Kerala, speaks Tamil so there’s a connection, wicketkeeper-batter, so in similar form to MS and his experience will be valuable for CSK,” he said.CSK’s management structure has seen frequent changes in recent years, with Dhoni returning to the role of captain during injury setbacks or transitional phases. Kumble feels that Samson is well-suited to provide stability in such situations, given his leadership experience with Rajasthan Royals.“I think it’s the perfect role for Sanju, he handles those duties almost like a vice-captain. He’s been Rajasthan’s captain for a long time so the leadership role is natural for him and that’s something CSK will be looking for. Last year when Ruturaj got injured, MS had to take over and before that, when Ravindra Jadeja was also captain, the captain came back there mid-season as MS Dhoni. The next captain will be for MS.”“Ruturaj has been identified and it’s good that he continues as captain even though Sanju has entered the scheme of things. I wouldn’t be surprised if MS Dhoni gives Sanju a leadership role at some point during the season. He will be part of the leadership group and in case Ruturaj is unavailable due to injury or otherwise, Sanju would probably take over from MS,” Kumble said.
