The Civil Aviation Ministry on Wednesday introduced several new rules for air passenger benefits, including provision of 60% free seats, strict adherence to standards for delays and cancellations by airlines and seating of passengers side-by-side on the same PNR, among others.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation in a press release on Wednesday issued a set of orders to airlines to make it easier for air travelers, saying that air travel has become increasingly affordable in the last few years.
“India has become the third largest domestic aviation market in the world, with air travel becoming more accessible and inclusive under the UDAN system. Today, Indian airports handle more than five million passengers a day, reflecting the rapid growth of the sector,” it said.
However, the ministry did not immediately specify when these rules will be implemented.
Here are the new rules issued by MoCA through Directorate General of Civil Aviation —
- A minimum of 60% of seats on any flight will be allocated free of charge to ensure fair access.
- Passengers traveling on the same PNR must sit together, preferably in adjacent seats.
- The transport of sports equipment and musical instruments will be facilitated in a transparent and passenger-friendly manner while complying with applicable safety and operational regulations. Airlines will also develop clear and transparent policies for the carriage of pets.
- Strict adherence to the passenger rights framework, especially in cases of delays, cancellations and denied boarding.
- Prominent display of passenger rights on airline websites, mobile apps, booking platforms and airport counters.
- Clear communication about passenger rights in regional languages to ensure wider accessibility and awareness.
