Mexico has offered to host Iran’s 2026 World Cup matches after the team said it was unwilling to play in the United States amid an escalating conflict between the United States and Israel.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday the country would have “no problem” getting involved in preparations for the Iran games if world soccer’s governing body agreed to a change of venue.

The Iranian Football Federation has already appealed to FIFA to have their matches moved from the United States due to player safety concerns. The request follows recent military escalation in the region, including joint airstrikes involving the US, which have raised concerns about the team’s security and logistics.
Iran is currently scheduled to play its group stage matches in several American cities as part of the three-nation hosting model for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Beyond immediate security concerns, Iranian officials are also wary of possible travel restrictions, visa complications and the broader political climate, all of which could affect the team’s preparation and participation in the tournament.
Mexico has now emerged as a potential alternative venue, with Sheinbaum’s statement signaling the country is ready to accommodate any changes if FIFA decides to act on Iran’s request.
However, relocating matches at this stage poses significant logistical challenges. The World Cup schedule, seat allocations, ticket sales and broadcast commitments have already been finalized, making any late changes complex and potentially disruptive. FIFA has not yet issued an official response to the matter.
The situation also cast doubt on Iran’s participation in the tournament. If their concerns are not addressed, the possibility remains that the team could reconsider participating in the World Cup altogether.
With the 2026 edition set to be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries, the development highlights how quickly global politics can intersect with sport. Mexico has opened the door for now – but the final call is on FIFA.
