Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said on Monday that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had fulfilled all pre-poll guarantees within four years of assuming power, even as opposition parties called it the most disappointing government in the state’s history.
“Punjab government has started a new tradition in politics by fulfilling all promises in four years, while the parties are unable to do so even in five years,” he said while addressing the media after completing four years of his government. “Key achievements included free electricity, daily power for farmers, canal irrigation reaching 78% fields, 65,000 government jobs and 5.5,000 employment opportunities along with expanded healthcare through Aam Aadmi clinics and free treatment up to ₹10,000,” the CM said.
However, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa accused the chief minister of “trying to mislead people through exaggerated claims about AAP’s performance”. “The reality is that the AAP government has achieved one of the most unsatisfactory tenures that Punjab has witnessed in recent times. People can clearly see the attempts at image-building. What they expect from the government is accountability, effective governance and tangible results – all of which have been missing in the last four years,” he said.
High promises: BJP
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said AAP came to power in Punjab on tall promises but the government failed on all fronts. He said promises to create 25 million jobs, end the drug problem within four months and guarantee a minimum support price for each crop have all turned out to be empty guarantees.
