Officials involved in the preparations for the council elections in the district appear to have been caught off guard by the announcement of the election on Sunday (March 15). Officials designated as presiding officers were forced to cancel their vacations as it became clear that they had to start election-related work on Monday (March 16). Meanwhile, the election wing had to go ahead with training for returning officers and assistant returning officers for Sunday evening itself.
“The training for around 100 officials took place online from 7.30pm until midnight on Sunday. The meetings were initially scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (March 17),” said a source involved in the matter.
Officials said the announcement came at least a few days before they expected, leaving them “in a race against time”.
Officials must complete tasks in the coming days, including randomizing election officials, remaining training, and assembling and deploying monitoring units.
“It is a fact that we have limited time. But we have to speed up the work accordingly,” said a key election official.
