Members of the Socialist Unity Center of India-Communist (SUCI-C) demanded a permanent solution to Dharwad’s waste management problems, including drainage and improper waste disposal.
Activists said the main drain in Jannat Nagar is full of garbage as waste disposal is not done properly.
“Due to stagnant water in the drain, the walls of houses on both sides of the drain got wet and water seeped from the ground. In addition, during heavy rain, water flows back down the drain and enters the houses through the bathrooms, making it extremely difficult for residents to live,” they said.
“Similarly, the smoke emanating from the waste treatment plant near Jannat Nagar is causing health problems to the residents of the entire area. Hence, they have demanded immediate cleaning of the main drain so that the water can flow freely,” they said, adding that it should also be cleaned regularly.
They suggested that boards be installed over the drains to prevent people from throwing garbage into them. Fogging should be done regularly to control mosquitoes, they said, adding that a scientific solution should be found to address the problems of the waste treatment plant.
The memorandum was submitted to zonal commissioner Shankar Patil, who said he would visit Jannat Nagar and take steps to resolve the issues.
Among others present were SUCI(C) leader Bhavanishankar Gowda, members Mumtaz Magalani, Jamuna Kalal, Reshma Sheikh, Mahbubi Sheikh, Shanur Lalamiya and Shirin Banu.
