India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill said winning the 2027 ODI World Cup remains the national team’s biggest goal. The captain admitted that the thought crosses his mind often, especially after India narrowly missed out on the title in 2023.
India dominated the 2023 World Cup with a flawless run before losing to Australia in the final. Speaking at the BCCI Naman Awards in Mumbai on March 15, Gill said the team still carries the motivation to get closer to the last trophy.

“Definitely. That’s the ultimate goal,” Gill told Star Sports when asked if he was thinking about the next ODI World Cup.
Gill added that the team felt they were one step away from lifting the trophy last year and are now looking forward to another opportunity in the next tournament.
“We felt like we were so close when we were here in the final in India last time. To get another crack in South Africa will be a great opportunity for us,” Gill said.
“Winning the World Cup in any format for the country is obviously the ultimate goal, which is something that crosses my mind sometimes,” he added.
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the tournament scheduled for October and November.
CAN INDIA WIN THE WHITE BALL HEIGHTS?
India are currently enjoying one of their most successful spells in ICC tournaments, having won several world titles in recent years.
The team lifted the T20 World Cup in 2024 and followed it up by winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. India then successfully defended their T20 World Cup title in 2026, becoming the first team to retain the title.
With these achievements already secured, India now have a chance to complete an unprecedented white ball treble if they win the 2027 ODI World Cup.
If Gill’s side manage to add a 50-over title to their recent T20 and Champions Trophy successes, India could become the first team in history to hold all three major ICC white-ball titles in the same cycle.
