History and Significance

Every country around the world celebrates National Doctors Day. In India, the tradition of celebrating this occasion began in 1991. Specifically, July 1 was chosen to celebrate doctors because Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on this day in 1182. He also died on the same day in 1962.

Roy was an eminent physician, educator, freedom fighter and statesman. He was the Chief Minister of West Bengal for over 14 years, from 23 January 1948 until his death. He is known for making significant contributions to health, education and public services during his tenure.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961 for his contribution to the country.
