Delhi woke up to cloudy skies, light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, with temperatures in the national capital dropping slightly from earlier highs, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
At 7 am on Sunday, Skymet Weather showed a temperature of 20°C in the state capital and reported rain and thundershowers.
The IMD, in its latest weather bulletin issued on the evening of March 14, has predicted light rain in the national capital on Sunday.
A “spell of very light rain/drizzle accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning” was forecast in Delhi on Sunday morning and afternoon hours with strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph with gusts up to 50 kmph.
The IMD also said that the national capital will experience a drop in maximum temperatures of 3-5°C on Sunday before again seeing a gradual increase of 3-5°C.
“Maximum temperatures are likely to be normal (-1.5°C to 1.5°C) to markedly above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) during the next 7 days,” the IMD said.
Delhi witnessed the hottest day of the year on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature in the state capital rising to 36.8 degrees Celsius — 8.4 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was 17.8 degrees Celsius, more than four degrees above normal.
Wednesday’s high temperatures came amid an unseasonably warm March, with the maximum temperature touching 35.7C last Saturday, the earliest in 15 years.
“There was no cloud cover, resulting in strong sunshine. The impact of western disturbances was also negligible, causing the mercury to spike,” Mahesh Palawat, vice-president, Skymet Weather, told HT at the time.
