Kylian Mbappé breaks World Cup history, breaks 20-year record and now chases Messi around Sweden

(AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Kylian Mbappé continued his relentless assault on FIFA World Cup records on Tuesday night, scoring twice as France cruised past Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32 to set several historic milestones. The Real Madrid forward has become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup knockout matches, moved into second place in the competition’s all-time scoring record by surpassing Miroslav Klos and moved one goal clear of Lionel Messi’s all-time record. France’s comprehensive victory at the New York New Jersey Stadium also set up a round of 16 meeting with Paraguay after Didier Deschamps’ side produced one of the most complete performances of the tournament. Bradley Barcola added another goal, but the night ultimately belonged to Mbappé, whose remarkable consistency on football’s biggest stage continues to redefine World Cup history.

Mbappé stands alone as the knockout king of the FIFA World Cup

The breakthrough came just before half-time and showed exactly why Mbappé has become one of the most feared players in international football. He collected possession on the edge of Sweden’s penalty area, skipped past his marker with a sharp crossing step and drove a clinical finish beyond the keeper in the 45th minute. The striker immediately sprinted towards France’s technical area to celebrate with Deschamps, who returned to the sidelines after missing France’s final group stage match following the death of his mother. Barcola doubled France’s lead eight minutes into the second half before Mbappé completed his brace in the 74th minute, calmly finishing another fluent French move to remove any lingering doubts about the result. Deschamps later paid a respectful bow to his star striker as Mbappé was substituted in the 85th minute after another game-winning effort. These two finishes had enormous historical significance. Mbappé’s first goal made it nine knockout goals at the World Cup, breaking the long-standing tie with Brazil’s Leônidas and Ronaldo Nazári, with Leônidas scoring in 1938 against Sweden and Ronaldo equaling it in 2006 against Ghana. Brazil’s joint record lasted 20 years before Mbappé added a second to make it 10 and move clear at the top. Those knockout goals came in three tournaments. He scored three goals during France’s title-winning campaign in 2018, including a brace against Argentina in the Round of 16 and another in the final against Croatia. He added five more four years later in Qatar, with two coming against Poland before his memorable hat-trick against Argentina in the final. His double against Sweden has now extended that remarkable tally to 10 goals in just nine World Cup knockout appearances.

Messi is fast approaching the overall FIFA World Cup record

Orthosis also reshaped another prestigious ranking. Mbappé entered the match level with Miroslav Klos with 16 career World Cup goals. By scoring twice, he moved to 18 career World Cup goals, overtaking the former Germany striker and establishing himself as the second highest goalscorer in the tournament’s history. Only Lionel Messi remains ahead. The Argentina captain has 19 World Cup goals to his name, leaving Mbappé just one strike behind him. Remarkably, the French forward has scored 18 goals in just 18 World Cup appearances across three tournaments, while Messi needed 29 appearances across six World Cups to reach the same milestone. The race remains very much alive. Both players have scored six goals during the 2026 tournament and are tied at the top of the Golden Boot table, although Mbappé currently leads the race according to the competition’s tiebreak criteria. At the start of the tournament, Messi became the first player to score against 13 different nations at the World Cup, extending his overall tournament record, but Mbappé quickly closed the gap with another outstanding knockout performance. His 18 World Cup goals are spread over three years: four in Russia 2018, eight in Qatar 2022 and six already during the ongoing tournament in 2026. This summer alone, he struck twice against Senegal, added another boost against Iraq during the group stage, went goalless against Norway and then produced his decisive double against Sweden.

France continues its assault on another FIFA World Cup

Mbappé was quick to focus attention on collective success rather than his individual accolades. “I’m well aware of who I am, how I play, what I’m going to do, but it’s not just about me,” Mbappé said through a translator. “The whole team is aware of what should be done. It’s a new competition that started today. We played well but we were timid. We could have been better at the beginning.” After a balanced opening period, France definitely made their way into the competition. They finished with 61 percent possession, attempted 25 shots, including 13 on target, completed 91 percent of their passes, won nine corners and limited Sweden to just eight attempts, only three of which were tested by Mike Maignan. The clean sheet also extended France’s impressive streak of scoring at least twice in seven consecutive World Cup matches, dating back to the 2022 tournament. The 3-0 victory was France’s biggest knockout victory at the World Cup since beating Brazil by the same scoreline in the final in 1998. Les Bleus now travel to Philadelphia to face Paraguay on July 4, with the winners advancing to the quarter-finals against either Canada or Morocco in Foxborough five days later. However, another opportunity awaits Mbappé now. With just one goal away from Messi’s all-time World Cup record and the knockout stages yet to begin, another chapter in football history could be written before the French tournament draws to a close.
