The state government’s decision to appoint superstructure builders as police officers, bypassing all existing norms, is a direct challenge to the unemployed youth of the state, said KC Venugopal, general secretary and MP of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
In a statement here, he said the government appears to have circumvented all existing rules to give appointments to people who are known sympathizers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)).
Bodybuilding is not recognized as a sporting event for appointment under the sports quota. The government seems to have bypassed even the Central Committee, which says that the appointment of sports quotas cannot be done directly for the appointment of inspectors. The age limit was also violated because while the age limit for appointment of a police officer is 25, the superstructure builders who were appointed are aged 40 and 38, Mr. Venugopal pointed out.
He alleged that CPI(M) sympathizers were rewarded with direct job appointments without insisting on a written test or interview, while those who cleared the tests and interviews were apparently left in the lurch.
He pointed out that the government initially decided to appoint these persons directly in January last year. However, after the whole thing became a controversy, a physical fitness test was conducted, in which one candidate is said to have failed. After this candidate represented himself, the government directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to proceed with the appointment without conducting another physical fitness test. But as the term of the government was ending, the appointment order was issued in a hurry, Mr. Venugopal said.
He said over two billion backdoor appointments have been made by the government in the last ten years. He alleged that the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leaders and their wives secured several important posts involving “deals” worth crores.
As the government’s term ends, the government is busy regularizing the ineligible appointments it has made over the years across ministries, corporations and boards, Mr. Venugopal claimed.
He added that the fact that even those who placed on the PSC rank lists are not named shows the depth of corruption.
Mr. Venugopal said that if the Pinarayi Vijayan government remained in power, all illegal and ineligible appointments would be regularized. He assured that these illegal appointments will be probed and reviewed by the UDF if it comes to power.
The UDF will stand firm with the unemployed youth in the state, he said.
