SpiceJet has suspended flight services from Chennai airport from this week, sources said.
Nearly 55,000 to 60,000 passengers travel through Chennai airport every day and SpiceJet was among the various airlines offering flights to many destinations.
According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airline was operating nearly 10 flights a day till April 30. The airline operated flights to cities including New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Patna, Hyderabad and Shivamogga. “Recently, they have been gradually reducing operations before suspending them now,” the official said.
Sources said the suspension was temporary and services from Chennai airport would resume in October. As the lease of the manned aircraft expired recently, the airline had to stop flight services from the airport for several months, sources said.
AAI officials said that another airline has recently drastically reduced the number of flights due to a sharp rise in jet fuel prices.
P. Sankar, a frequent flyer, said it was disappointing that passengers would have one less option to choose from in the list of airlines. “It is crucial for an airport to have sufficient number of airlines and to offer connections to multiple destinations. This way they can attract more passengers. Adequate options will ensure that passengers have a reasonably priced ticket. For example, between Chennai and Thoothukudi, there is only one airline and the prices are quite high. If there is more competition, the prices will be affordable and it will help the passengers a lot.
