Iran US war news LIVE: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States military had carried out heavy bombing of targets on Iran’s Kharg Island and warned that oil facilities on the island could also be targeted, AFP reported.
The strategic island, which manages almost all of Iran’s crude oil exports, has so far been largely avoided by both the United States and Israel.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the attack was carried out on his orders and claimed it was one of the most powerful bombings in the history of the region.
Here’s what Trump said
“A short time ago, at my direction, United States Central Command conducted one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East, completely obliterating every MILITARY target on Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” Trump said.
He added that the United States had deliberately avoided striking the island’s oil infrastructure.
“Our weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated the world has ever known, but for reasons of decency I have decided NOT to wipe out the oil infrastructure on the island,” he said.
Trump also warned that the decision could change if shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains suspended.
“However, should Iran or anyone else do anything to disrupt the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider that decision. During my first term and today, I have rebuilt our military into the deadliest, most powerful and most effective force, by far, anywhere in the world,” he said.
The US president added that Iran will not be able to stop US military strikes.
“Iran HAS NO CAPACITY to defend against anything we want to attack – there is nothing they can do about it!” he said.
However, Trump administration officials have reportedly indicated that seizing Kharg Island remains a possible option as the conflict in the Middle East continues.
Kharg Island, located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Iranian mainland in the Persian Gulf, is responsible for processing roughly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports, according to a recent report from JPMorgan.
