Namma Deve Gowda Appaji’s Canteen has been temporarily closed due to disruption in the supply of commercial gas cylinders in the city.
Named after former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, the canteen has been operating since 2017 to provide food and refreshments to people at highly subsidized rates.
Run by TA Sharavana, a member of the Legislative Council from the Janata Dal (Secular), the canteen was opened under the Indira Canteen scheme launched by the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the same year. However, Mr. Sharavana said on social media platform X that the recent disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders have made it difficult for the canteen to operate.
“Due to interruption in the supply of commercial gas cylinders, Namma Deve Gowda Appaji canteen is becoming difficult to operate and has been temporarily closed. I have been running this canteen since 2017 to provide food and refreshments to the hungry at very low prices. Once the supply of gas cylinders returns to normal, the canteen will resume as usual,” he wrote in X.
