Both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders in India have become more expensive due to supply disruption. The revision affected households and businesses that rely on gas for cooking in their day-to-day operations.
The price of a 14.2 kg gas cylinder for home cooking has been increased by ₹60 about a week ago, while the 19 kg commercial cylinder has become more expensive ₹144 in major cities and states of the country.
This price increase comes as oil marketing companies (OMCs) factor in disruptions in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies caused by the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.
The US-Israeli attacks on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation have led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key sea route through which India receives 85-90% of its LPG imports from West Asian countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
As a result, many Indian households are struggling to find alternative cooking options and are relying on electronics such as induction cooktops. Meanwhile, restaurants have warned that fuel disruptions could force them to cut back on menu options, raise prices or even temporarily close.
India is facing a fourth straight day of LPG shortage, with disruptions reported in the country’s major cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai.

Cost of Commercial Pressure Cylinders and Beneficiaries of Ujjwala
The price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders was increased by ₹114.5 per unit earlier in March. These units are primarily used by establishments such as hotels, restaurants and eateries.
After the hike, a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder would now cost ₹1,883 in Delhi, according to reports.
Meanwhile, LPG cylinder prices under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which covers more than 10 lakh connections provided to low-income households, remain unchanged, PTI reported earlier.
Alternatives to LPG in case of shortage
Amid the shortage, many restaurants have also stopped serving mutton dishes as non-vegetarian dishes require cooking time and higher fuel consumption.
These establishments are increasingly favoring serving vegetarian dishes to customers, which generally require less cooking time. However, even some vegetarian dishes such as dal (lentil) require longer cooking time, which increases fuel consumption.

As panic spreads among consumers, the national capital has witnessed the emergence of a thriving black market in LPG cylinders, according to multiple reports.
In such markets, domestic pressure cylinders are sold at a premium ₹2,000 up to ₹2,500 each in the black market. Commercial pressure cylinders cost almost ₹3,000 in several parts of the capital, almost double the official rates.
New Delhi responded to the growing panic by invoking the Essential Commodities Act (ECA), which favors LPG for households over commercial users.
Refineries, meanwhile, are operating at full capacity and are focused on supplying increased production exclusively to domestic consumers. Additionally, the LPG cylinder reservation interval has been extended from 21 to 25 days to avoid hoarding.
