
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted “mostly clear skies” in Delhi on Thursday, a day after the mercury touched 38°C. As the capital continues to report record high temperatures in March, city dwellers can expect relief from the sweltering heat in the coming days.
The latest IMD weather bulletin has predicted that high temperatures will continue till Saturday, March 14. After that, generally cloudy skies are likely on March 15 with very light rain and thunderstorms during the morning or mid-morning hours. The Met department said, “A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from March 14, 2026.”
In neighboring states, “Scattered light rainfall with thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds reaching speed (30-50 kmph) also likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh during 14-16; Uttar Pradesh on 15-16 and Rajasthan on 14-15 March,” IMD said Notably, IMD has issued an orange alert for heat conditions in Gujarat. A yellow alert is in effect for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was well above normal by more than 5.1 °C at several places across India, including Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Jammu, Chahati and Kashmir, Gotha.
The weather today
Maximum temperatures today will be significantly above normal, around 5 degrees Celsius or more, settling around 34°C to 36°C. The minimum temperature today will also be noticeably above normal, around 3.1°C to 5.0°C. This means that the maximum temperature will be around 16°C to 18°C.
Temperatures are expected to hover between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius over the next 5 five days. “Gradual decrease in maximum temperature by 4-6°C likely over western Himalayan region during next 7 days and no significant change in maximum temperature likely over plains of northwest India during next 24 hours; gradual decrease by 2-4°C during next 4 days and no significant change thereafter,” the IMD said.

On Thursday morning, residents of Delhi woke up to a “poor” average air quality index (AQI) reading of 222 at 8am.
