KT Augusti, biochemist and academician, died on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 93.
Dr. Augusti is known for his work on plant nutraceuticals and is considered a pioneer in research into the medicinal properties of garlic and other Allium species.
A native of Pala, he received his PhD in biochemistry from BITS Pilani and has spent more than four decades teaching and researching in India and abroad, including at the University of Kerala and the University of Maiduguri in Nigeria.
He was also the founder general secretary of the Kerala Academy of Sciences and helped establish it as a scientific movement. After his retirement, he continued to publish essays, poetry and historical writings.
He is survived by his wife Alice, sons Thomas Augustine, José Augustine and Paul Augustine.
