With the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting on March 28, the tournament organizers are closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation and its possible impact on the event, a senior IPL official said.
There have been concerns about possible disruption of logistics and infrastructure should the conflict escalate. These include possible problems related to fuel supply, such as cooking gas and oil used for floodlights in stadiums, as well as air travel disruptions that could affect players and officials flying to the tournament from abroad.
When contacted by India Today about the situation and any contingency planning, a top IPL official said that the league is currently monitoring developments closely but has not taken any preemptive decisions.
“We can’t pre-empt the situation. We have to wait and watch. Everyone we’ve spoken to says things are under control. Hotels are saying the same, so for now we have to go by that,” the official said.
He added that at present the organizers do not see any immediate reason for changes in the schedule or arrangements.
“Everything is fine from now on. We will monitor the situation. Why should we preempt anything and decide now?” he said.
When asked if the league had a contingency plan in place in case the situation worsened, the official said organizers would respond according to the circumstances.
