Prof. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa Halse on Wednesday said students should prepare their research paper with their own hard work and effort instead of depending too much on artificial intelligence (AI) tools. They must use their own knowledge and critical thinking to research, he added.
He spoke after the opening of a three-day workshop on research methodology organized by the Study, Research and Extension Center of Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram KSOU in collaboration with Ministry of Social Welfare.
Professor Halse said 345 students enrolled in research programs at the university this year. Recently, there have been cases where some research studies lacked originality, highlighting the need for plagiarism checks. In this regard, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced research ethics as a subject in research programmes, he added.
The workshop was organized with a government grant of ₹ 5 lakh and provides food and accommodation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. He urged the students to take advantage of the workshop and added that students preparing for competitive exams should read NCERT textbooks.
Prof. R. Mahesh of the BN Bahadur Institute of Management said that artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in research, but researchers must ensure that their original efforts are not diminished.
