The NDA alliance on Tuesday moved an adjournment motion in the Karnataka Legislative Council demanding that the state government immediately fill up about 2.85 lakh vacancies in various departments, corporations, boards and universities.
Leader of the Opposition Chalavadi Narayanaswamy said recruitment processes have remained stalled for several years, leaving thousands of unemployed graduates at risk of crossing the upper age limit for government employment.
He said vacancies exist in 43 key departments, including revenue, education, health and police, affecting the functioning of the administrative machinery. With many positions remaining vacant, existing employees are often forced to handle workloads designed for a few employees, he said.
Pointing out the shortage of staff in the higher education sector, Mr. Narayanaswamy said universities across the state were facing shortage of both teaching and non-teaching staff.
Members of the NDA alliance said the vacancies were affecting public service delivery and urged the government to launch a special recruitment drive.
Speaker Basavaraj Horatti said that the matter raised through the adjournment motion was transferred under Article 330 for further discussion.
