
District Monitoring Committee for Accessible Elections (DMCAE) chaired by Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman met at Villupuram Collectorate here on Sunday.
The committee, which consists of the municipal commissioner, the differently-abled social worker, the social worker, the head of education, differently-abled persons and non-governmental volunteers, is tasked with creating voting conditions for differently-abled persons and reviewing measures taken for them.
Currently, more than 18,600 people with various disabilities are registered in the district. Sakšan — a mobile application for the differently-abled was created by the election commission, said the Collector.
The DMCAE discussed the Election Commission’s guidelines for making polling stations accessible to differently-abled voters, starting with the provision of ramps in polling centers, means of transport, allowances for assistants accompanying differently-abled voters to the polling station.
The committee also sought suggestions and recommendations from non-governmental volunteers and differently-abled persons to make the voting process inclusive.
