
A total of 1,039 motorists were charged with drunken driving during special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri on the weekend of March 6 and 7. All perpetrators will be brought to justice.
Hyderabad traffic police have booked 445 motorists, including 377 two-wheeler riders, 22 three-wheeler drivers and 46 four-wheeler drivers. Based on blood alcohol concentration levels, 100 cases recorded values between 30 mg and 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, 191 between 51 mg and 100 mg, 84 between 101 mg and 150 mg, 39 between 151 mg and 200 mg, 12 cases between 201 mg and 250 mg, 01 mg and 250 mg levels exceeding 300 mg per 100 ml.
The traffic police in Cyberabad detained 273 motorists during similar checks. Of these, 214 were two-wheeler drivers, eight three-wheeler drivers, 49 four-wheeler drivers and two heavy vehicle drivers. Among the offenders, 234 of them recorded a blood alcohol level between 36 mg and 200 mg per 100 ml of blood, 23 recorded a level between 201 mg and 300 mg and 16 had a level between 301 mg and 550 mg.
Malkajgiri traffic police booked 321 motorists during weekend check drives. Of all the bokeds, there were 249 two-wheeler riders, 11 three-wheeler drivers, 59 four-wheeler drivers and two heavy vehicle drivers. Based on blood alcohol levels, 284 offenders recorded between 36mg and 200mg per 100ml of blood, 26 recorded between 201mg and 300mg and 11 recorded between 301mg and 550mg.
According to the police, driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. If a drunk driver causes a fatal accident, he will be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for manslaughter not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment with a fine.
According to the Malkajigiri police, between March 1 and March 7, the courts dealt with 228 cases of drunken driving in the commission. Of these, five offenders were sentenced to prison with a fine, 10 were fined with community service and 213 were fined. In Cyberabad Commissionerate, courts dealt with 132 cases of drunken driving between March 2 and March 7, with eight offenders fined and jailed, four fined with community service and 120 fined.
