A three-day capacity-building workshop on Kannada language data collection and linguistic annotation, led by researchers from AU-KBC Research Center of Anna University, Chennai, began at Shankaraghatta, Kuvempu University campus on Monday.
R. Vijay Sundar Ram, Senior Research Engineer at the AU-KBC Center, said in his introductory remarks to the workshop that in an AI-driven economy, data is oil. “We hardly use search engines these days because we expect the answers to be accurate and in a summary format. AI tools work efficiently based on the database we supply. Large language models (LLMs) work on data built up over several years,” he said.

Mr. Sundar Ram said that sufficient number of individuals proficient in the language is required to provide LLM data. We are happy to organize a capacity building workshop for the students of Kuvempu University. The three-day workshop will help students understand how LLMs work and how to create them effectively,” he added.
Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University prof. Inaugurating the workshop, Sharath Anantharmurthy said that the capacity building workshop will help students find new job opportunities. “We used to think that language students could eventually become teachers. But now students have opportunities in the software industry and can become knowledge developers,” he said.
prof. M. Dattatreya, Chairman, Department of English; Meti Mallikarjun, Professor of Linguistics; and others were present. The workshop is attended by around 60 English master’s students and researchers.
