CPI(M) urges the Election Commission of India to extend the SIR process by a month
The CPI(M) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to extend the deadline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by at least one month, citing practical difficulties faced by voters in completing the verification process.
The demand was made through a resolution passed at the party’s two-day State Committee meeting held in Vijayawada on June 28 and 29 under the chairmanship of Central Committee member K. Lokanatham.
The meeting was attended by Politburo members BV Raghavulu and U. Vasuki, State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao and Central Committee member D. Ramadevi.
CPI(M) officials said many voters lacked awareness about the process and found it difficult to submit the required documents within the stipulated time. They expressed concern that senior citizens, persons with disabilities, migrant workers, people in remote areas and economically weaker sections could be excluded from the electoral rolls if the deadline is not extended.
They also said that the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have not completed the distribution of application forms to all households.
They urged the ECI to conduct awareness campaigns at the village, ward and booth levels, publicly display mapped voter lists and set up special assistance centers for elderly voters, women, the disabled and migrant workers.
The resolution also called for clear guidelines for married women who would move their voter registration after marriage and stressed that no voter should be deleted from the rolls without proper verification and prior notice. The leaders called for the review process to be conducted in a transparent, fair and non-discriminatory manner to ensure the right of every eligible citizen to vote.
