The state council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) met on Sunday to finalize the candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. There is speculation that the two-year restrictions on MLA sittings will be relaxed in some cases based on the recommendations of the district councils.
A handful of MLAs who have completed their third term are likely to make way for new candidates, though exceptions will be made in some cases if the district councils insist.
Among sitting MLAs, ministers including Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Food and Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil and Agriculture Minister P. Prasad are likely to figure in the candidate list. Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener TP Ramakrishnan said last week that the official announcement of the front’s candidates will be made only after the election date is announced.
